Thinking about South Africa? You’re not alone — this incredible country is a dream destination for so many, and it’s easy to see why. Sure, the breathtaking scenery, epic wildlife, and wide-open landscapes are top of the list, but there’s so much more to fall in love with. South Africa is packed with lively cities and stunning coastal escapes, and has many more unforgettable adventures to experience on top of that.
To inspire you to make the move and relocate to South Africa, we have put together our guide to the top things to see and do in South Africa.
Get your hiking shoes on and head to Table Mountain

If you are someone who is looking to stay active whilst you are living in South Africa, then you are going to need to pop on your hiking shoes and take on the challenge that is Maclear’s Beacon. Found at the summit of Table Mountain, this is the best way to see the city and the coastline of the Cape Peninsula.
For those who are not up for the epic walk that is up Table Mountain, then you don’t need to despair about the idea of not being able to see the amazing views. The alternative is the Table Mountain Cableway, which will take you up to the top of the mountain in no time at all.
Learn more about history at the Apartheid Museum
There is plenty to see and do in Johannesburg, which means that it can be hard to know where to start. One of the best tourist attractions in the city is the Apartheid Museum. Around since 2001, this museum has featured the story of South Africa’s journey through apartheid.
Within the museum you will find interactive exhibits and a variety of emotional photographs too; all of which show the struggle that was faced by the people of South Africa at these times.
Visit elephants at the Addo Elephant National Park

The wildlife that makes its home in South Africa is one of the key reasons that many people travel there. You can see plenty of the Big Five out in the wild, but if you really want to get the best chance to be up close and personal with some of the biggest, then you will want to go to one of the National Parks.
The Addo Elephant National Park is found in Port Elizabeth. It has the Big Five, which is lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards and rhinos, but also is able to offer you the chance to see whales and great white sharks. What could be a better place to spend some time in your new home?
Take in some contemporary African art
If you are a fan of art, then one place that you need to visit is the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa. The largest museum of contemporary African Art in the entire world, if you are in Cape Town, or even if this means a bit of travelling, then you are going to want to pay this place a visit.
Not only is the art contained in the museum some of the best celebrations of the creative brilliance that is found across Africa, but the building itself, found in a transformed grain silo, is also something that needs to be seen to be believed.
Stop and reflect at the house of Nelson Mandela
One of the most important pieces of history in South Africa is Mandela’s House. Found in Soweto in Johannesburg. This is the family home that Nelson Mandela lived in with his family before he was sent to prison.
Whilst the shell remains the same, inside the house you will find a variety of exhibits that detail his life and the impact that this one man had on not only the country that was his home, but also the rest of the world.
Soak up the sun on Boulders Beach

You may think that Boulders Beach is a simple place to soak up the rays and catch a tan whilst you are in South Africa, but the truth is that it offers so much more than that. As well as offering amazing views of the towering granite boulders that are dotted across the area, it also has crystal clear waters.
Away from the scenic views that surround you, you will also find the African Penguins, who are known to call the beach their home. You can get close to them, without disturbing their homes, thanks to a dedicated boardwalk designed for just this reason.
Satisfy your craving with some of the delicious foods on offer
When you think of South Africa, there is a chance that you may not think of delicious foods, but there is a whole host of treats that are just waiting for you to indulge in whilst you are in South Africa.
It has to be said that the majority of food that you can sample has more carnivorous leanings. This includes things such as karoo lamb, steaks, ostrich fillets and anything that you can cook to perfection on the traditional braai- a South African barbecue.
So what are you waiting for?

So, as you can see, whether you are planning on living in South Africa for a long time or just in the short term, you are going to find plenty of things to keep you entertained and in love with the beautiful country that it is.
Unbelievable scenery, a rich and diverse history with a huge impact on the world around it, delicious foods and a world of wildlife that is some of the most interesting in the world.
