The top thing to see and do when you move to Germany

Writer's picture: SeanSean

What comes to mind when you think about Germany? Perhaps it has beautiful scenery, amazing history, and is just a beer festival.

The great thing about Germany is that even if you make it your new home, there is something for everyone.

No matter your age, interests or what amount of spare time you have, moving to Germany means that you will find plenty of things to keep you entertained.

To help you work out where exactly to start, we have put together what we consider the top things to see and do when you move to Germany. If you need assistance with moving overseas to Germany, you can contact our team today.

1. Add your love lock to the Hohenzollern Bridge

Locks on the Hohenzollern Bridge in Cologne

Cologne is a stunning city with much to offer to those who spend time there. If you want to visit the stunning Gothic cathedral while you are there, you will want to head across the Hohenzollern Bridge.

Here, you will find a sea of love locks attached to the railings of the bridge. Each one represents love, and lots of people go there to seal their bonds! Once the lock is in place, the key is often thrown into the water

2. Get the best views of the highest mountain

Couple walking on the Bavarian Alps

If you are a fan of hiking and you want to take in some of the most breathtaking views the country has to offer, then you are going to need to head out to the Bavarian Alps. Here, you will be faced with the choice to climb the mountain on foot (which is not for novices, of course) or, if you want to take it in at a more leisurely pace, then you can head up in the modern Zugspitze cable car instead.

While you are in the area, we recommend that you visit the Eisee Lake at the base of the mountain. This is particularly true if you are visiting in warmer weather, as the lake is so blue that you will find it hard to resist jumping in.

3. Take the time to reflect

Whilst Germany is so much more than its rather emotional history, we must recognise what has gone past. One place that you can do this is in Nuremberg.

Here you will find the site of the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds, which whilst it stands empty, the buildings do make for an eerie setting when you walk around. This is especially true when you consider what may have been, as well as what once was.

4. Go along the German wine route

For those who love to win, a visit along the German wine route is a must. The Deutsche Weinstrasse as it is known is a 53-mile route that is the perfect wine-lovers road trip!

On the way you will be able to visit vineyards and villages, all interspersed with a variety of MIchelin-Starred restaurants too. Perfect if you are a fan of all the finer things in life.

5. Geek out at the Disney castle

It is said that the Schloss Neuschwanstein castle is what inspired Walt Disney to make his castle. However, despite the scenic setting and the Disney links that this somewhat busy tourist hotspot has, the history of the castle is far more fascinating.

It is said to have been a retreat for the “mad” King Ludwig the Second and after he died, in mysterious circumstances may we add, it became a famous landmark and attraction.

6. Relax and unwind in Baden-Baden

Sometimes we need to slow down the pace and indulge in some me-time. If this is your dream then you are going to want to think about hitting the many pamper spots that are found in the Black Forest.

Famous for the healing and soothing mineral waters, there are plenty of amazing places that you can relax in. Particularly if you head to Baden-Baden, which is a famous spa town with 12 (yes 12!) Thermal springs.

7. Indulge in some delicious cheese in the Allgau Region

Cheese fans unite and head to the Allgau region to sample some of the very best alpine dairy cow produce. This particular area is packed full of meadows and quaint wooden farmhouses and due to the scenic and quiet nature of the area, it is recommended that the very best way to get around is on a bike.

Of course, it goes without saying that if you are looking to do this then you are going to need to make plenty of cheese stops along the way. The good news is that not only will you find an assortment of shops, but, should they happen to be shut, then you can still satisfy your cheese cravings by purchasing a treat at one of the cheese-packed vending machines instead.

8. Take in the iconic Berlin Wall

No time in Germany should be spent without visiting the iconic Berlin Wall. The scene for many a photo, there are several places in the German capital city where you can still find the original wall

The best for many is the Berlin East Side Gallery, a 0.8-mile stretch of the wall by the river Spree. Here, you cannot only see the wall but also take in the variety of murals painted onto it by artists from all over the world.
