When you are an expat and you are moving to a brand new country, there is a good chance that you are going to want to make sure that you choose the best new location to call your home. For some, this may be something rural, but for others, this may be something that is more city-based.
Moving to a country like Switzerland means that you are definitely going to be able to enjoy the very best of both worlds, however, for this blog post we are going to focus on the idea of moving to a city. So, with this in mind, let’s take a look at the best cities in Switzerland for expats to live.
Geneva
Geneva, Switzerland
When you think of a city in Switzerland to move to, there is a good chance that Geneva is going to be pretty high on that list. Known to be one of the most popular cities for expats to live in Switzerland, Geneva is not only beautiful but it is cultural too.
Found along what is known to be the picture-perfect Lake Geneva, those who are native to Geneva speak French. It is also a place for some of the most recognisable organisations in the entire world. This includes the International Red Cross, the United Nations and also the World Health Organization. Having these names in the city means that you are likely to come across a variety of diplomats whilst you are exploring the city streets.
Bern
Bern, Switzerland
Not many people realise that Bern is actually the capital city of Switzerland, not the larger, more recognisable names of Geneva and Zurich. Bern is located somewhere between the parts of Switzerland that speak French and those that speak German, it also is the home to the Swiss parliament.
The city centre, which is listed by UNESCO is not only beautiful, but it is also known for its great shopping and socialising opportunities. It also is able to have that small town feel, whilst still being a busy and bustling city at heart!
Winterthur
It seems like the cosy, German-speaking city of Winterthur is one of those places that is so often overlooked. However, this means that many people who are moving to Switzerland are going to miss out on this beautiful place to call home.
Whilst it may seem like it is small and quaint, Winterthur is sixth among the largest cities in the country and has quite a high level of expats that live there. This should make it much easier for you to feel settled when you move there.
Another plus point to choosing Winterthur is that Zurich is quite close by and can easily be reached by train. This means that you are going to be able to head into the much busier city should you need to. However, you get the bonus of being able to live in a much cheaper location and saving yourself some money.
Lugano
Lungano, Switzerland
If you love nothing more than being able to enjoy la dolce vita without having to move to Italy itself, then you will probably want to add Lugano to your list of possible choices in Switzerland.
Found just one hour away from the Italian border, this particular city has a feel of Milan around it, rather than what you may expect to find in Switzerland. Many people who move there find that they quickly fall in love with the beautiful buildings and the cafe culture, which means there is always somewhere to relax and unwind when you need to.
Add into this the warm Mediterranean climate, and you have a truly perfect place to live!
Lucerne
It has to be said that Switzerland is a country that is full of beautiful places to live, but one of the very best has to be Lucerne. This city is next to a lake, which already makes it a popular choice for those seeking a stunning place to live, however, this is then ramped up by being surrounded by tall, snow-capped mountains.
If you were to think of a place that was able to offer a look at the postcard-type scene you would expect with Switzerland, then Lucerne is definitely going to be pretty high on that list.
Away from the landscape, this is a smaller city that speaks German, and whilst it may be on the warm, cosy and compact front, it still is able to have the type of buzz that can only come when you choose to make your home in a city!
Zurich
Zurich, Switzerland
We couldn’t have a rundown of the cities to move to in Switzerland without giving a nod to Zurich. This city is known to be one of the largest and the most economically thriving in the whole country.
Zurich has the perfect mixture of great work opportunities, amazing socialisation, and cultural options. Add to this a fantastic transport system and plenty of picture-perfect spots spread out through the city streets, and it is tricky to find a reason not to move there.
One thing to note though is that it can be quite expensive to move there, so be prepared for this! However, if you want to try and save cash, but still get that big city buzz, then there is always the option to move to the outskirts where things do cost a little less.
