The Pros and Cons of Living in Cyprus

If you’re looking to make a move, Cyprus is one of those places that people recommend for a number of reasons, and it is not difficult to see why. Cyprus is an idyllic place to live with a welcoming community, climate, and way of life. It is not difficult to see why people choose to move to Cyprus daily.

However, like any place, moving to Cyprus has pros and cons. Understanding both is key to making an informed decision so let’s look at what you need to know. If you would like a removal service to Cyprus, you can always contact us at Pinnacle Removals & Storage.

The Pros

1. It’s Easy to Adjust

It’s easy to adjust to moving to Cyprus because the area speaks English quite frequently, so there’s no real language barrier.

It might be due to Cyprus's large amounts of tourism, but locals in all settings speak English - roughly 75% of the population will converse with you in passable English. Naturally, you’ll be expected to learn Greek and Turkish to feel thoroughly acclimated, but it’s not mandatory.

2. Rent Costs are Low

Rent is one of the big things for anyone looking to move to another country, but you’ll be pleased to know that the cost of living in Cyprus - specifically when it comes to rent - is much lower.

Your average apartment in the city center will be anywhere from €700 (£589) to €1,500 (£1262) per month. It largely depends on how much space you are looking to acquire.

The prices tend to fluctuate depending on where you want to be. If you choose to leave the city and go into the countryside or down to the coast, you will benefit from cheaper housing.

3. Lots of Expats

If you do choose to move to Cyprus, then you will be in good hands because there are plenty of expats who are going to be there to provide you with the support you need.

You are not the first expat who has thought about moving abroad, and you won’t be the last. There are plenty of active communities that welcome new citizens and work with them to help them acclimate.

After all, you don’t need to run yourself ragged trying to figure out how to fit in if there are a dozen people who will tell you how to fit in once you arrive.

4. The Weather

Naturally, the weather is one of the best parts of living in Cyprus. The climate is usually sunny and warm, and there are plenty of great places you can go and enjoy the weather.

Most people move to Cyprus because it looks like a tourist destination pretty much 24/7, so if you are after a warmer climate to enjoy life, you really can’t go wrong.

The Cons

  1. Limited Transport

Unfortunately, Cyprus doesn’t have a lot of public transport. Unless you have a car, you will struggle to get to a lot of places. There’s no real train system on the island in any real sense, so you will need to rely on buses, but they’re also quite a few places that can’t be reached by a bus, so a car does become fairly vital.

2. Work Isn’t Plentiful

If you are going to live in Cyprus, you better come with a job already prepared. Those who don’t have jobs ready to go will find that it’s very difficult to secure employment. Unfortunately, the island isn’t very big, and most of the jobs are largely occupied with things like tourism and the days today running of the area, which means there aren’t a lot of opportunities.

3. Cyprus is Slow

One of the interesting characteristics of life outside of the UK or US is the bureaucracy tends to grind to a bit of a halt when you move out to somewhere like Cyprus or other places in Europe. Cyprus is a lovely place to live, and it does offer a very laid-back and bucolic lifestyle, but the drawback to that is that everything can take a little while to get sorted.

If you have a pressing issue involving the government, don’t expect it to get resolved that day. It might get resolved within a week, but at the same time, you’re going to need quite a bit of patience.

4. Utilities Cost a Lot

When we talked about the cheap cost of renting property in Cyprus, you probably thought this was the main reason why people go to Cyprus, but in truth it is counterbalanced quite substantially by the cost of utilities. Electricity is the big one when it comes to Cyprus, because it costs quite a bit to keep the lights on, so you will be paying a large amount in utilities every month. And, as is the case with any place around the world, if you rent, these costs will be put upon you to manage.

Should You Move?

So, Cyprus is a lovely place to live. There are a lot of things in Cyprus that people will appreciate, and it’s very much like a paradise. However, with that being said, there are things to keep in mind, and specific considerations that you will have to make if you want to enjoy your new life in Cyprus.

It’s a type of place that you move to once you are firmly established. If you want to go and try to start a brand-new life and build up from scratch, Cyprus probably isn’t the best place to go and do this. It’s more an area that you moved to when you have money, a secure job, and plenty of prospects on the horizon because life can get quite expensive, and there are certain parts of it that may not agree with everybody.

However, Cyprus still has a lot to offer. These cons we’ve discussed are not reasons not to move; they’re just things to keep in mind. If you do want to move, we would be more than happy to help you.
